The Observer notes that the film's story break up into a "lurid and rather witless final act." At the same time, The Telegraph points out the irony of a mystery about hearts being ripped out having a "flatlined pulse." The Hollywood Reporter states that the film "slumps from scene to scene lacks momentum and tension, remaining stagnant and lifeless.."
Despite these criticisms, The Jewish Chronicle notes that "despite a questionable ending, the film still manages to stand out with its intelligence and originality compared to many of the low-quality movies produced by Hollywood." Despite not being a perfect film, The Pale Blue Eye's visually stunning and unique setting and talented cast make it worth a watch for those interested in atmospheric period pieces. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
